Trim and cut videos
Trim the start and end of a video, or cut unwanted parts out of the middle, right in the viewer — the original is kept, so you can change your mind.
Open a video in the viewer and click Edit video in the bottom-right corner, or choose Edit… on a single video's menu. A trim panel opens under the video, with a strip of frames from the clip.
Cutting
- Drag the handle at either end of the strip to move the start or the end.
- Drag anywhere else on the strip to mark a range, then press Cut to remove it from the middle of the clip. A range that reaches an end moves that end's handle instead.
- Click a cut range to select it, then Restore to put it back.
- Click anywhere else on the strip to move the playhead there. Playback skips what is cut.
The panel says how much is kept, for example Keeps 1:12 of 3:40.
Saving
- Save re-encodes the clip with only what is kept, and the grade if it has one. The panel shows the progress; Stop abandons the save and leaves the video as it was.
- The output button, Output: as it is, saves in the clip's own format; click it to convert while saving instead. An .avi is always saved as an .mp4.
- Reset goes back to the whole original clip.
- Cancel, or
Esc, leaves without saving.
Each save renders from the untouched original, which is kept in the originals folder. So a handle can be dragged back out over footage an earlier trim removed. While a save runs you can close the viewer; its notice shows it, and the viewer shows Encoding in progress….
Trimming needs FFmpeg; without it the button reads Editing videos needs FFmpeg and offers to get it.
