Back up your photo library
Mirror the whole library onto another disk — photos, originals and catalogue — and get a reminder when the last backup is more than a week old.
The backup folder
Name the same place as the library, on another disk — for example S:\Pictures\Family for \\NAS\Pictures\Family. Type it and press Enter, or browse.
That folder is kept identical to the photo folder: what is added to the library is copied, what is deleted is deleted, and nothing is ever copied back. Originals kept outside the photo folder, and a zip of the catalogue and settings for each weekday, each week of the month and each month, go inside it in a .portman2-backup folder that the mirroring leaves alone.
Backing up
Back up now runs a backup, with its progress below and Stop; from the notice outside Settings it can also be paused. The pane says when the last backup finished and when each part — Photos, Originals, Catalog snapshot — was last done, and the reason if the last attempt failed.
Before deleting anything from the backup because it has gone from the library, the backup asks Delete from the backup?, saying how many files out of how many. Above 100 files it asks a second time. If the photos went from the library by mistake, the backup is the only place they are still kept.
When the last backup is more than a week old, a reminder notice offers Backup now.
Converted videos
When a backup folder is set, converting moves each video's original into the backup instead of keeping it in the originals folder. Videos converted earlier can be moved there with Move to backup; after that, Reset cannot bring them back.
The pane is only available for a library in the library list.
