Portman2 is in beta. Features are still being added, nothing here should be taken as final, and things can change or be removed without notice.

Phones, tablets and the LAN

View photos on a phone over Wi-Fi

Open your Portman2 library on a phone or tablet over Wi-Fi: switch on the LAN server, then open the address it shows in the phone's browser.

Turn the server on

Open Settings ▸ LAN server and switch on Run the server on this machine. The pane lists the addresses to open on another device, under Open on another device, each with a copy button and Open in browser. While the server runs, a green LAN server running chip shows in the main window's top bar.

Open one of those addresses in the phone's browser. To keep it handy, add the page to the phone's home screen: it then opens like an app, with no browser bars.

More than one library

One server covers every library on the computer that has Let the household browse this library switched on. When more than one is shared, the first page is Libraries, a list to pick from.

Every page names the library it belongs to.

Access code

By default no code is needed: the household network behind your router is trusted. Switch on Require an access code in the LAN server settings to require one. The addresses the pane shows then carry the code; a device that opens one of them is remembered, and a device without it is told the library needs an access code.

What is never served

Hidden photos and photos in the trash are never shown on the LAN pages, with or without a code.

If the computer is on a network Windows classes as public, such as a café's, Portman2 warns before starting the server there without a code, and the top bar's chip turns red and reads public interface.
