Search box shortcuts
Keyboard shortcuts for the search box: move through the suggestions, narrow by one, open an album or tag instead, and clear the search.
The search narrows whatever grid is open — an album, a tag, a date, All
photos — and ANDs with the tag filter and the star. Every word has to
match: a year, a month (2013-08, aug 2013) or a day; a tag or album
name; a file name; or, with the keyword model on, a keyword the model
found in the photo. Inside an album, "mum" searches the album; the box
says so, and its ✕ widens the search to All photos.
Picking a suggestion turns the word into an exact tag, album or date, drawn as a chip, so "mum" stops also matching "Mummu". Nothing is remembered across a restart: a search is a question asked now.
A keyword suggestion can be made a tag, on the photos it was found in, with its Make a tag of this… button.
With the keyword model on, a sentence — "dog on a beach" — or a word no suggestion matches exactly ends the suggestions with Photos that look like "dog on a beach". Picking it ranks the grid you typed it over, best match first, by what the model sees in each photo; the chips go on narrowing, and the bar's ✕ goes back. The model has limits worth knowing:
- Two things with their own colours get mixed: "a white dog and a black cat" also finds a black dog.
- Counting is rough, and "without people" is read as "people".
- A small subject away from the middle can be missed — the model looks at a square from the centre of each photo.
- It knows what things are, not who: names are for face recognition.
- ViT-L/14 sees fine detail better than ViT-B/16, at a cost in speed (Settings > Machine learning).
