Fix photos with a missing or wrong date
When an imported photo has no date, or its file name and metadata disagree, Portman2 holds it back and lets you choose the right date — for one file or many at once.
An import files every photo by its date. A file goes to the Conflicts tab of the Import dialog instead when Portman2 cannot be sure of that date:
- it has no usable date, either in its name or in its metadata; or
- the date in its file name and the date in its metadata fall on different days.
Deciding one file
Each row shows the file and the dates it has, with a small button for each date it can be filed under: its file name's date, its EXIF date, and its file date — or, when they fall on different days, its modified and created dates separately. Hover a button and its tooltip says which date it is and what it would file the photo under, for example File under the EXIF date — …. The modified date on a copy straight off a camera card is usually when the photo was taken; the created date is often just the day the file was copied. You can also:
- Pick a date… and choose any date;
- Reveal in Explorer, or open the file in the viewer to look at it;
- Not now — takes it off the list and nothing else. The file stays where it is, and importing that folder again asks about it again.
Deciding many
Tick files, or use Select all and Select none. Then:
- Each → its own file date, filename date or EXIF date files each one under its own date of that kind, where it has one;
- Pick one date for all N… files them all under one date;
- Not now — take all N off the list.
With nothing ticked, a folder of several files has All → file date — and, where their dates disagree, All → filename date and All → EXIF date — which do the same for every file in it. A file chosen from a Quick Import still goes into the album and gets the tags that batch was given.
When a JPEG is filed under a date you chose because its own was missing or wrong, the date is written into the photo as well.
